Fuu
Explorer of the Seas

Fuu is a 499-year old traveler and adventurer. He was born in 1512 on one of the islands of Tierra del Fuego, off the southernmost tip of the South American mainland. Since he’s an islander, he’s faster in water than on land. He has three feet, a very large mouth, and spikes over his head and back. Thanks to his three feet, he swims very fast. He scares away wild animals with his exposed teeth in his huge mouth. Mind you, he is not scary at all. He is just not able to close his mouth to cover his teeth. Therefore, he usually has a hard time making friends. The animals that see his teeth get scared and avoid getting close to him or to become friends with him. And his family has long ago alienated him due to his ugly looks. Fuu secretly boarded a ship when he was 8 years old. The sailors thought he was a wild animal and captured him. They tied him up and took him in front of the captain of the ship, the Portuguese explorer, Ferdinand Magellan. Magellan liked Fuu a lot and adopted him. Fuu joined Magellan on his world travels and became his best friend and right-arm. Fuu learned from Magellan mapping and steering. In about a year’s time, they arrived in Ecuador and then in Cebu Island of the Philippines on April 7, 1521. Fuu became Magellan’s translator, as he could also speak Filipino. Although they got along well with the natives, Fuu has never liked them. And he warned Magellan not to trust the Filipinos. Unfortunately, he was right, and they ended up getting into a battle with the natives. Fuu lost his friend Magellan forever at this battle, known as Battle of Mactan… The battle from Fuu’s perspective: “Our ships were stuck in-between the rocks, and we could not move forward. When the day set, 50 of us jumped into water. We left 11 of our crew behind us to defend the ships, and we swam a distance as long as about ten men. When we arrived at the shore, 1550 natives were waiting for us in three groups. When they saw us, they started making strange noises. We fought against men armed with rifles and arrows for about half an hour. Since I am small, I was able to escape all arrows and elude the natives, and even knock some of them down. But the situation was hopeless. Some who recognized Magellan took away our leader and our friend from us. It was one of the saddest moments of my life…” The size of the crew reduced significantly due to the losses in the Philippines. The remaining crew continued the voyage, but they encountered a lot of challenges throughout. When they arrived in Spain on September 6, 1522, Fuu parted ways with the crew. Fuu was exhausted by the battles and terrible treatments he has witnessed during this voyage. He decided to settle on the La Palma Island. After living with Magellan’s memory and not leaving the island for 100 years, Fuu eventually reminisced the joy of traveling and decided to travel the world once again. Spending only a few months of the year on the Palma Island, Fuu still travels the world and makes new friends out of people who are not afraid of him and who love him. He is a thoughtful, pleasant, and funny one. He likes traveling and exploring new places…
